ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Drachm (Silver, 31 mm, 3.85 g, 5 h), Arab-Sasanian type. Citing governor ʿUmara ibn Tamim (AH 84-85 / AD 703-704), SK (Sijistan), AH 85 = 704. Draped Sasanian-style bust to right, wearing elaborate mural crown; behind head, ‘GDE ʾp̄zwt’ (‘[may his] glory increase’ in Pahlavi); before head, ‘ʾwmʾlʾ / Y tmymʾn’ (‘ʿUmara ibn Tamim’ in Pahlavi); in outer margin, ‘bism Allāh ˗ rabbī’ (‘In the name of Allah, my Lord’ in Arabic). Rev. Fire altar with ribbons, flanked by two attendants; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, SK (abbreviation for the name of the mint in Pahlavi). Album C40. Extremely rare. Somewhat double struck and with some deposits, otherwise, about extremely fine.
